Imperial Household Agency mulls March 4 for Princess Mako’s engagement ceremony

The Imperial Household Agency is considering holding an engagement ceremony for Princess Mako, the eldest grandchild of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, and her fiance Kei Komuro on March 4 next year, it has been learned.

Princess Mako, 26, the eldest daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, and Komuro, 26, a former university classmate and a legal firm employee, were informally engaged in September this year. The upcoming ceremony will seal their engagement ahead of a wedding ceremony expected next autumn.

In the engagement ceremony called “Nosai no gi,” Komuro’s messenger will visit the residence of Prince Akishino to formally give notice of the engagement. The Imperial Household Agency is considering scheduling the ceremony on March 4, a Sunday, out of consideration for Komuro’s work.

The ceremony will be followed by “Kokki no gi,” in which Komuro’s messenger will notify Prince Akishino’s family of the date of the wedding, and the rite of audience called “Choken no gi,” in which Princess Mako officially greets Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.
